Pros and cons
Pros
- A free plan with unlimited standard aliases, so paying is a choice rather than a requirement
- Paid entry at $1, longest term $1, renewal $4 a month
- Open source, with cookie-free analytics on its own server and no personal data collected
- Custom domains, so aliases can sit on a domain you already own
Cons
- Support runs on email, help centre and community only
- The free plan caps shared domain aliases and allows a single recipient per alias
Who it suits
- People signing up to newsletters, shops and trials without giving a real inbox address
- Readers who want to start free and stay free, since the caps still cover everyday use
- Anyone on iOS, Android and Firefox who wants alias creation on mobile and in the browser
Who should look elsewhere
- Readers who need end-to-end encryption of stored mail, which addy.io lists as no, should compare MEGA at $3.99 a month
- Anyone wanting a full mailbox rather than aliases can compare Apple Inc. at $0.99 a month
- Those shopping for password storage rather than aliasing are better served by Sinew Software Systems at $1.99 a month
What you get free
The free plan is a working account, not a trial, and plenty of people stay on it. You get unlimited standard aliases. Shared domain aliases are held to a per-account cap, each alias forwards to a single recipient, only a limited set of alias domains is open to you, and forwarded mail runs into a monthly bandwidth allowance.

Frequently asked questions
How much does addy.io cost when I start and when I renew?+
Paid plans start at $1. A month on the standard plan is $4, and the renewal price is $4, so the first term does not change what you pay later. The longest term runs 12 months at $1.
Is there a free plan, and what does it actually limit?+
Yes, the model is listed as free. The free plan gives unlimited standard aliases, shared domain aliases within a per-account cap, a single recipient per alias, a limited set of alias domains, and a monthly bandwidth allowance for forwarded mail.
Does addy.io encrypt my mail end to end?+
Stored mail has no end-to-end encryption. You can turn on optional GPG or OpenPGP encryption for forwarded messages, covering the message, its attachments and, if you choose, an encrypted subject, but it encrypts to the recipient's own public key. Terms fall under GB.
Can I use my own domain with addy.io?+
Yes, custom domains are supported, so you can build aliases on a domain you own instead of relying on the shared domains in the free plan. That keeps addresses consistent if you already run a site or a brand, and the iOS, Android and Firefox apps create those aliases the same way.
Which devices and browsers does addy.io work on?+
You can use addy.io on iOS, Android and Firefox, which covers both mobile platforms and the main browsers. Alias creation is available on the phone in your pocket and in the browser you already use, with the same alias list on each.
How do I get help if an alias stops working?+
Support runs on email, help centre and community: email, a help centre and a community forum, with no live chat or phone line. Answers arrive in writing, so it helps to describe the alias and the problem in full.
Who is behind addy.io?+
Will Browning owns addy.io, and the code is open source, so the service can be read and self-hosted. It is based in the United Kingdom with terms under GB. Analytics run on its own server with no cookies and no personal data, and web server logs record addresses only briefly.
